I realize your question on my blog was probably rhetorical, but I suspect the city looks better at night because the darkness hides the things we don't like to look at. It smooths out the rough edges and shows us only the things that are "worth" shining a light on. Everything else is forgotten. It makes it prettier to look at, but that's about all.

Babies look sooo cute when they sleep. My kids are grown up, but I can't resist clicking their sleeping faces.
